re. the 'acer' v 'japanese maple' naming debate (not that you could call it such!?) from what i can discover via google, it seems that the term acer covers the group of trees as a whole (also including all types of maple tree) while japanese maple refers to a specific species of acer - acer palmatum being the latin name. so i was mistaken to be using the two names interchangebly ;)
